Frequently Asked Questions: Interlibrary Loan

What is interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service which allows the library at Roger Williams University School of Law to borrow material for law students, faculty and staff from libraries outside the RWU system.

When should I use interlibrary loan?

You may request interlibrary loan service when the book or article you need is not available from the Roger Williams University School of Law or University Libraries or from our respective subscription databases.

Who may use interlibrary loan?

Roger Williams University School of Law students, faculty, and staff may use the Law Library interlibrary loan service. All other members of the RWU community, please visit the Main Library's Order Books & Articles from Other Libraries page.

How can I use interlibrary loan?

You may request interlibrary loan material electronically by clicking on the Request an Interlibrary Loan tab and completing the electronic interlibrary loan form.

How long does interlibrary loan take?

Requests for material are usually placed the same day that they are received by the ILL office.

It normally takes 3-10 days for a book to be delivered. Articles often arrive sooner since the majority are sent as PDF's via email.  We cannot guarantee delivery within a specific period of time.

How will I know when the material I requested has arrived?

You will be notified by email as soon as your ILL book arrives. Articles will be emailed to you.

How do I get the material I requested?

Books must be picked up at the Circulation Desk of the Law Library. Articles will be emailed to you.

How long can I keep the material?

The loan period for books is established by the lending library and is usually 4 weeks. The due date of the book will be clearly marked on the book band on the front cover of the book. Books borrowed via interlibrary loan should be returned to the Law Library Circulation Desk on or before the due date.

Can I renew?

Renewals may be requested, but are not guaranteed. Renewals are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Please request renewal before the item is due. Once the item is overdue, lending libraries are less apt to renew the items.  If you still need an item that cannot be renewed, please return it to the library as soon as possible.  We will attempt to obtain a different copy for you.

Please call the Circulation Desk at 401-254-4548 before an item is due to inquire about renewing it or email your renewal request to Thelma Dzialo.

What will it cost?

There is usually no charge for Interlibrary Loan material.
